In Part 1 of Both Sides of VR, Dr. Christopher Claude speaks with Dr. Phil Rumrill about how vocational rehabilitation supported his journey from vision loss in rural Vermont to college, employment, and a career in rehabilitation counseling.

They discuss assistive technology, transportation, accommodations, self-advocacy, natural supports, high expectations, and the counselor-consumer relationship. Dr. Rumrill also explains why early work experiences, manageable caseloads, and lived experience should guide VR services.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Incorporate consumer perspectives into VR practices to drive self-determined career goals.
  2. Assess modern VR approaches and assistive technology for STEM career prep.
  3. Implement principles of high expectations and informed choice in transition planning.
