Project 3: Preparing VR Participants with Disabilities for High-Quality Employment in STEM Through AI Innovation and Integrated Counselor Supports
This project is a comprehensive capacity-building initiative designed to expand access to high-quality Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) careers for individuals with disabilities. It will equip Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors (VRCs) with integrated social communication training tools, targeted STEM career development resources, and AI-enabled decision support systems developed in partnership with Stanford University.
Activities
- AI-Supported Social Communication Training: In partnership with Stanford University, Topic 3 integrates the Noora conversational AI platform into VR training and technical assistance. Noora is designed to strengthen workplace-relevant social communication competencies such as conversational reciprocity, perspective-taking, emotional insight, and professional interaction. Through webcasts and structured technical assistance, VRCs learn how to incorporate AI-supported social communication tools into individualized employment planning and workplace readiness preparation.
-
Targeted STEM Career Development Supports: This project provides
structured tools to support VRCs in guiding participants through STEM exploration,
credentialing pathways, work-based learning experiences, and employer engagement.
Key deliverables include:
- A STEM Career Preparation Bootcamp;
- A Quick-Start Guide for STEM career planning;
- Expansion of structured models such as TECH-Prep;
- Practical resources to improve alignment between participant strengths and STEM labor market opportunities.
- Develop VocRehabAI, an AI-enabled Chatbot Tailored Specifically to VR Practice: This tool will provide real-time decision support related to STEM labor market data, career pathway mapping, accommodation strategies, and individualized planning guidance. By embedding AI into daily practice, VocRehabAI enhances efficiency, accessibility, and data-informed service delivery.
